As the build-up to the Olympic Games now reaches feverpitch, a novel road race is planned for next Friday night (20th July). The eventwill feature a timed 1 mile run along a straight flat course from Fitzpatrick'sRestaurant to Flynn Park, the Bellurgan United FC grounds, in the picturesquesetting of the Cooley peninsula.
The proceedings get underway at 6:00 p.m. with half-mile racesfor Under 12 Boys and Girls. This will be followed at 6:30 p.m. by 1 mile racesfor Under 16 Boys and Girls. All juvenile athletes will pay €2 to enter at thestart line.
The main event is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. Therewill be four categories – Senior Men, Senior Women, Masters' Over 40 Men andMasters' Over 40 Women. The cash prizes in each of these categories are €100for the winner, €75 for the runner-up and €50 for 3rd place. All runners willbe accurately timed. Entry costs €12 in advance on runireland.com or €15 on thenight. Ample car parking will be available at Bellurgan United FC.
This event has been organised by Maria Duffy of St Peter'sAC and has been approved by the Athletic Association of Ireland. The course hasbeen accurately measured by Jim Gonnelly of North East Runners.
Any profits from the night will be used for the benefit ofBellurgan United. This progressive football club was established in 1936 andcurrently has in excess of 300 members aged from 6 to adults. The clubactivities include a summer programme for 6 to 9-year-olds. During the soccerseason, which runs from September to May, the club fields 17 teams catering for10-year-olds up to seniors. The underage teams play in the Dundalk Schoolboys'League, while two senior teams play in the Meath & District League.
The club is always seeking to raise additional funds tohelp with the upkeep of the excellent facilities at Flynn Park and to ease thefinancial pressure of running so many teams which provide a popular sportingoutlet for young people from throughout the Cooley peninsula.
